Meet Kate, a civil engineer . . .

I was drawn to Arup’s progressive, holistic approach; focus on sustainability, open and social work culture, and its diversity of projects. As a new graduate, I was not exactly sure what type of work I wanted to do but I knew that at Arup I would be able to explore and learn through the variety of projects offered. Arup is more focused on employee development than the other firms I have encountered. Employees are seen as assets and not just ‘machines’ so this makes it an excellent place to learn and start a career.

While at Arup I have worked on various projects in California including Doyle Drive in San Francisco, Bay Meadows in San Mateo, and the Graduate School of Business at Stanford.

I really enjoy the work culture at Arup. The firm offers many opportunities for socializing inside and outside the office. There are work-sponsored athletic teams, Friday night happy hours, and fun global, national and office-wide competitions.

Besides Arup bolstering my social life, I have learned about amazing projects and cutting edge ideas. Weekly global newsletters update employees about what is happening in other offices and knowledge is shared through online skills networks, forums and meetings.

I would recommend Arup to other graduates because of the many opportunities for exploration and professional growth. Its employee-centered culture encourages your personal interests and allows you to immerse yourself into your career.

What do civil engineers at Arup do?

Civil engineering – the design of road and rail alignments; stormwater, drinking water, and sanitary sewer systems; and power and communication delivery facilities – is required on almost every design Arup undertakes. Our civil engineers thrive on the excitement and design challenges inherent in Arup’s delivery of an unmatched list of sustainable, iconic and world-changing projects. These range from the basic needs of an impoverished village, to the next important civic building, to the newest high speed rail line, to the planning and design of new cities that are carbon-neutral. In a work environment that places creativity and collaboration at the fore, our civil engineers interact, imagine, and create with world renowned architects, forward thinking urban planners, sophisticated transit agencies, private owners with global portfolios, and governments working to define their sustainability agendas and design their holdings for long-term success.
